The recommended image dimensions for Discord profiles, servers, and messages in 2026

Discord handles images differently than most social media platforms. Since it started as a gaming chat app and grew into a general community platform, the image sizes tend to be smaller and more compact. If you're building a community on both Discord and Reddit, the image requirements are quite different between the two. Getting your avatar, server icon, and banner right makes your profile and community look polished instead of blurry or awkwardly cropped.

Discord Profile Avatar Size

Your Discord profile avatar should be 128 x 128 pixels minimum, but uploading at 512 x 512 pixels gives the sharpest results on high-resolution and retina displays. Discord scales it down automatically, and higher-resolution uploads look better when users click on your profile to see the full-size image.

Discord accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and AVIF formats for avatars. The maximum file size is 10 MB. Animated GIFs and other animated formats work for profile avatars, but only Discord Nitro subscribers can use them - free users are limited to static images.

Your avatar displays as a circle everywhere in Discord - in chat messages, member lists, DMs, and your profile card. So make sure the main subject (face, logo, character) is centered and doesn't get cut off by the circular crop. There's also a small cutout at the bottom right for your online status indicator, so avoid placing key details there.

Discord Profile Banner Size

Discord profile banners are a Nitro-only feature. If you have Nitro, you can add a banner image to your profile that shows up when someone clicks on your name. The minimum recommended size is 680 x 240 pixels with a ~17:6 aspect ratio (close to 5:2). For the best results on ultrawide desktop monitors, upload at 1100 x 440 pixels or even 1500 x 500 pixels to prevent stretching.

Animated GIF banners are also supported with Nitro. The max file size for banners is 10 MB. On desktop, your circular avatar overlaps the bottom-left corner of the banner. On mobile, the avatar sits in the bottom-center. Keep all important content safely within the top-right quadrant.

Discord Server Icon Size

Your server icon is the image that represents your Discord server in the server list. The recommended size is 512 x 512 pixels with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Discord displays server icons as circles (or rounded squares on some platforms), so center your logo or image and avoid putting anything near the edges.

Discord accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, and GIF formats for server icons. The max file size is 10 MB, though for animated GIFs, keeping it under 2.5 MB is recommended for faster load times. Animated server icons are available for servers that have reached Boost Level 1 (2 boosts). Keep in mind that server icons scale down to a tiny 32x32 pixels in the sidebar server list, so avoid small text or intricate details.

Discord Server Banner Size

Server banners appear at the top of your server's channel list and give your community a more branded look. Static banners require Boost Level 2, while animated banners require Boost Level 3. The recommended size is 1920 x 1080 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio, though the minimum is 960 x 540 pixels.

The top portion of the banner is obscured by a dark UI shadow and your server's name, and the bottom fades into Discord's dark-mode background. Place focal points directly in the center and avoid putting text in the top third of the banner. A subtle gradient, pattern, or simple graphic works best.

Discord Server Invite Splash

The invite splash is the background image that shows up on your server's invite link page. It's unlocked at Boost Level 1. The recommended size is 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio). This is the full HD resolution, so you can use a detailed image here - it's displayed much larger than the server icon or banner.

Discord Emoji Size

Custom emojis on Discord should be 128 x 128 pixels with a 1:1 aspect ratio. The max file size is 256 KB, which is pretty tight, so you'll want to optimize your images. Discord supports PNG, GIF, and APNG for emojis. APNG preserves cleaner transparency than standard GIFs. Animated emojis follow the same 128x128 size and 256 KB limit.

Emojis are scaled down to display at 32 x 32 pixels in a standard chat block (or 48x48 when sent alone), so keep your designs simple with high contrast and thick lines. Detailed artwork or small text will be illegible at emoji scale. Transparent PNG backgrounds work well for emojis that blend naturally into messages.

Discord Sticker Size

Custom Discord stickers must be exactly 320 x 320 pixels with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Stickers have a 512 KB file size limit and support PNG (static), APNG (animated PNG), and Lottie (.json) formats. Standard GIFs aren't supported for stickers - you'll need to convert animated GIFs to APNG format.

Each server gets 5 sticker slots by default, with more unlocked through server boosts. Lottie stickers must be 100% vector data (no embedded raster images), require transparent backgrounds, and animations are capped at 60 FPS.

Discord Embedded Image Limits

When you share images in chat messages, Discord has some limits to be aware of. Free users can upload files up to 10 MB per file. Nitro Basic subscribers get 50 MB, and full Nitro subscribers can upload up to 500 MB. Server boosts also affect limits: Boost Level 2 servers allow all members to upload up to 50 MB, and Level 3 bumps that to 100 MB.

Discord supports PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, and AVIF for images, and MP4, WebM, and MOV for video. There's no video duration limit - Discord relies entirely on file size caps. Inline embeds and link previews are resized to fit within roughly 400 x 300 pixels, and images exceeding about 90 million total pixels won't generate a preview.

For the best inline preview, landscape images at 1920 x 1080 pixels or 1280 x 720 pixels work well. Discord scales images to fit the chat column width (around 400-520 pixels depending on the window size), so extremely large images don't offer much visual advantage in the chat view. Avoid AVI and MKV formats, as they force the recipient to download the file rather than playing inline.

Discord Role Icons

Custom role icons display next to a user's name in chat and require Boost Level 2. They should be 64 x 64 pixels with a 1:1 aspect ratio and a maximum file size of 256 KB. Only static formats (PNG, JPG) are supported - no animations.

These icons display incredibly small (around 20x20 pixels) next to usernames, so use transparent PNGs with bold, simple shapes like shields, stars, or flat logos. Intricate details will be completely lost at that display size.

Discord Scheduled Event Cover

When you create a scheduled event in your server, you can add a cover image. The recommended size is 800 x 400 pixels with a 2:1 aspect ratio. Max file size is 10 MB. Discord's UI crops the top and bottom of the image, so keep all vital information within the middle horizontal band (roughly 800 x 320 pixels).

Discord Server Discovery & Guide Images

Server Discovery Cover: Used as the thumbnail when users search for your community on the public Server Discovery page. The recommended size is 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9). Use thematic art rather than text, since UI elements overlay the bottom. Max file size is 10 MB.

Server Guide Banner: Appears at the top of the onboarding "Server Guide" channel. The recommended size is 1920 x 480 pixels (4:1 aspect ratio). Your server's icon overlaps the bottom-left corner, so keep key content centered or to the right.

Discord Channel Icons & Group DM Avatars

Channel icons are 64 x 64 pixels (1:1), while Group DM avatars are 128 x 128 pixels (1:1). Both support PNG and JPG formats. These are simple, small-scale images, so keep designs clean and easily recognizable at a glance.
